Katriina Ilmaranta uses her long expertise in the field of digital visualisation research. New projects focus on artificial intelligence and interactivity.
After spending some years in research, digital artist Katriina Ilmaranta, doctor of arts, has started new projects in business. As an indication of this, the company's name changed to Pixelmint.
Ilmaranta's interest has previously been in production design and digital visualization for the film. These areas seemed too demanding for a small company, so the scope has been refined. Pixelmint primarily works with interactive graphics for web and mobile, however, in projects with a limited size range.
The Achilles heel of digital projects is always project scaling. No amount of experience helps here, there seems always to be more work than originally planned. That's why we want to emphasize the meaningful use of limited resources.
Ilmaranta's dissertation "Immersed in Illusion - An Ecological Approach to the Virtual Set" was published in 2013. As the name suggests, it dealt with virtual staging for film and television.
Ultimately, virtual set technology does not differ significantly from other interactive technologies. Of course, after the focus of work has changed, it has been necessary to adapt thinking to the world of HTML, CSS, and JavaScripts.
The first implemented projects have been related to the area of virtual museums. In these projects, the cultural heritage has been visually revived with the help of new technology.
However, Pixelmint's main project at the moment is interactive e-books.
I am extremely happy that we have succeeded in creating a working model for interactive e-books. The wonderful illustrator Maria Vilja has joined the team and is currently and is working on a book series about a polar bear found in a local supermarket.
